Bowlers win you test matches. How true is that? It was well displayed in this test match with the fast bowlers taking 20 wickets and also adding unbeaten 89 unbeaten runs for 9th wicket in second innings. The partnership of Shami and Bumra certainly changed the course of the game. It brought us back in the game striking off the possibility of a loss for India. This one of the most riveting performance by Shami and Bumrah.

It was a disastrous start by India in their second innings batting as they were reduced to 55 for 3 and it only meant India could lose the match. Bad patch of Pujara and Rahane throughout the first match and first innings of the 2nd test added insult to injury. It was high time that amendments were done. Rock solid Pujara started playing his natural game. Playing more number of balls mean he could get back in form. He took his time and started applying himself. Rahane was looking a bit rusty. He put away bad balls and was also playing a bit aggressive and slammed a half century. Finally their stars started to shine and they were able to add 100 runs partnership and gave solidity to the Indian innings. As things started to look better and India managing to score 155 runs, Pujara and Rahane both succumbed towards the end of the day. India ended the day with 181/6.

Overnight pair of Rishabh Pant and Ishant Sharma could not hold the fort and were dismissed early on day 5. It was Shami and Bumrah who stole the show with their gritty and stubborn display of batting, thereby providing India to get back into the game again. Lots of words were exchanged in the middle and the English bowlers tried to rile up Shami and Bumrah. Rather than going for wickets, the England bowlers choose to knock out the batsman, but it badly backfired. It not only charged up the Indian batsman, but also, allowed them to score quick fire runs. This proves that extra yard put in the nets always shows good results. the Indian bowlers have been taking their batting seriously in the nets and hence the outcome. England were put in with 60 overs to play as India declared the innings for 298/8 with the target of 272 runs. They had to either to go for the win or see through the 60 overs to survive the test.

Lightning struck again as the lethal pair of Shami and Bumrah fired in their respective first over of the second innings, sending the opening pair back to the pavilion for a duck.
Joe Root had to walk in early as both the openers went for duck. He tried to drop the anchor and managed to score 33 runs to his name, highest score in England’s 2nd innings total until he managed to open the face of the bat to the incoming delivery of Bumrah right in the hands of Kohli. at the first slip. Once Root departed, it was Joss Buttler and Moeen Ali who tried to show some resilience and stayed on at the crease. It was Mohammed Siraj’s turn to show what he had to offer. He dismissed Ali and Curran in back to back deliveries. It was a disappointing match for Sam Curran as he got a King Pair. Only respite was that he got big wicket of Virat Kohli.

England was reduced for 90/7 in the 39th over with mere 21overs to survive. In came Ollie Robinson. He gave a good stand to Joss Buttler and the pair added 30 runs for 76 balls. They were inching closer towards the end of the days play. England would have thought that they would survive and draw the test match, as they had to see through only 9.1 overs of play.

Jaspreet Bumrah was firing all cylinders from one end. He was trying to set up the batsman. As a part of the plan, he let Ollie Robinson to play a few shots. He was bowling round the wicket. He bowled an away going delivery and Robinson was hit on the pads and Bumrah appealed. Umpire didn’t give out. Kohli immediately took the review. The ball had pitched in line and was crashing the middle stump. Robinson had to walk back to the pavilion; England’s score was was 120/8.

Joss Buttler was holding fort at one end and Mark Wood at the other end. Siraj was bowling the 52nd over. He bowled a delivery, which went straight, and Buttler managed a faint edge and got caught by Rishabh Pant. Score was still 120 runs.

England had to survive for just 8.2 overs and Anderson walked in. For India, it was matter of one wicket for a famous victory at Lords. Siraj struck again on the 5th ball of the 52nd over and rattled the stumps of James Anderson and the rest is history. India won the match by 151 runs. Siraj ended up with 4 wickets for 32 runs in the second innings. The Indian team started celebrating and so did the crowd. A win at the home of cricket is always special.
